Farmington Canal Heritage Trail

Combination trail ride into MA

May, 2023 by steve.schwinn

Road part of this trail as an out and back in conjunction with the Southwick RT and the Columbia Greenway RT from Avon, CT, to Westfield, MA, an approximately 50 mile round trip (25 on the Farmington Canal Trail).
The trail is in very good condition. The transition to the Southwick Trail at the CT/MA border (with no road crossing) is seamless.
Road crossings decrease as you head north and are well marked with push-button warning signals to alert traffic.
Half Mile Falls Park at the north end of the Columbia Trail in Westfield is definitely worth a stop!

Be careful

May, 2023 by martinhaley

Has many crossroads with limited sight distance that affects safety for both the user and vehicular traffic. Town needs to clear overgrowth.

Pequonnock River Trail

Limited trail

April, 2023 by arlene.deardorff

4/21. We parked at the Beardley Zoo parking lot and biked only 1 mile until we couldn't go any further. There was flooding and construction was taking place for a new water pipe. So we had to go to our car and start somewhere else. We parked on Trumbull Ave. at the Dept of Parks and Recreation as the parking lot for the trail on Trumbull was closed. We biked about 5 miles to Whitney Ave. and there was another sign that the trail was temporarily closed. The 5 miles we biked were lovely along the river. I'm not sure who you would contact to find out the status of the trail. We were hoping to do 26 miles round trip and got in 13.

E-Bikes

March, 2023 by pmicc01

NYS State Law prohibits E-Bikes from riding on the trail but it seems no one is obeying or enforcing the law. It will be an issue when someone gets hurt. There is no difference between an E-bike and a motorcycle except for the way it is powered. I'm not sure this will be an issue when someone gets hurt.

Great Trails

January, 2023 by asiamcraejohnson

I’ve completed the Wilton trails in Lovers Lane, Entrance near Orem’s Dinner and Mathews Park. All are great. My favorites are the Wilton Trails, you enter and your engulfed in nature. Absolutely beautiful. I also love walking In Mathews park although that is more of a city trail to me not as much nature as these are concrete paved and you pass near traffic and such. So grateful to all the hard work put into to providing these trails thank you!

North Shore Rail Trail

ok ride

November, 2022 by senseibarb

Yes the path is new, surrounded by greenery and tuck back from the main road. My biggest complaint is the amount of crossroads at the beginning in smith town. Too much interruptions AND You really need to be careful even when you hit the rider alert button for crosswalks The ride itself is nice, but no facilities on path.

Farmington Canal Heritage Trail

Very nice

October, 2022 by dcsnyder

Rode Plainville CT to CT/MA border. Northern section. I like that you go through many towns on the lower half then out in the country from Simsbury north. Beautiful scenery. Paved the whole way, some sections with roots coming through.

nice trail

Very nice fully paved trail. Saw some gophers and deer along the way. Maybe an eagle too but not sure. Might have been a hawk or a vulture. Parked at senior center as recommended in the trail information section.

Bumpy Ride

September, 2022 by senseibarb

I’ve downgraded my previous review to four stars. I rode the trail yesterday morning, and while it is still a great workout the trail needs to be repaved in several areas. The patchwork that was done is not even with the results making for a bumpy ride in several places. The massapequa side and Bethpage side is flat and smooth. It’s the middle area of the trail that gets a bit rough. Not good for the bike or the butt. Hopefully this can get corrected as the scenery and length make for a stunning ride !
