Took our horse and carriage for a family outing and loved this fabulous trail. Flat, wide, with room for all users, and beautiful scenery…You can’t go wrong. Equestrian users, please follow the rules and leave a good impression on others so we will remain welcome…This trail is a GEM!

This trail is easy to find from either the Simmemahoning Park Office or the Wildlife Viewing Area which is a mile north of the park office. There are parking lots and rest rooms in both areas. The park office is manned during the day. The trail is flat and wide. Great for families. The southern part of the trail passes 40 Maples day use area. There are restrooms at 40 Maples. South of 40 Maples the trail exits onto and shares the park road that goes to the lake. Can be ridden using mountain bikes or gravel bikes.
This is a nice and somewhat atypical rail trail. The first couple of miles going east to west have a smooth, crushed stone surface, and the remainder of the trail is unimproved and is more of a double-track dirt road with a hard-packed but somewhat rougher surface. 38c or larger tires are recommended. The whole area is very rural, but this part of the trail has a wilder and more remote feel.
Unlike a typical rail trail, this trail has a consistent, but not terribly steep uphill grade going from east to west for the whole length. The trail gains roughly 1,000 feet of elevation over 6 miles as it climbs the Allegheny Front. Near the top of the climb, you'll find some very nice views of the valley below.
This is more of a local commuter trail than a destination trail, but it's very nice nonetheless. This trail is just one small part of a large and growing network of off-street bicycle paths that make getting around the State College area by bicycle a relatively safe and pleasant experience. The trail connects the Penn State University campus (via the Penn State West Campus Bike Path) with the neighborhoods and commercial areas along North Atherton Street, Tudek Park, and the neighborhoods near Valley Vista Drive. Tudek is a large and very nice community park with its own small system of crushed-stone multi-use paths, picnic tables/shelters, sports fields, and other amenities.
The trail intersects with another bike path that runs parallel to nearly the whole length of Valley Vista Drive and Science Park Road which in turn connects to other bike paths serving a larger area around State College. The entire trail and connecting spur are paved with asphalt/concrete. The western end of the trail connects to a singletrack mountain biking trail that continues on through the Scotia Barrens (State Game Lands 176).

The trail borders or passes though the Penn State University golf course for most of its length and connects the main part of the Penn State University campus with the west end of downtown State College and with several other bike paths that traverse a much larger area. The sections of the trail paralleling Atherton Street and West Park Avenue are asphalt and the sections paralleling Corl Street and West College Avenue are crushed stone.
We stopped here 9/22 en route to biking the C&O - what a treat! The cinder surface was well maintained: smooth sailing for our hybrids. varied and beautiful scenery, historical placards along the trail. . Logistics were fantastic: Plenty of parking in Shippensburg, drinking water and clean restrooms at both ends. 2- hours round trip, finished at sunset, followed by takeout Vietnamese dinner from Rice+Pho. Next am we took self-guided walking your of Shippensburg, also worth doing Rice+Pho.. wandered around historic Dientuen smShippensberg next day for an hour or so Thanks
We rode this trail on October 9-10/2022 to see the colorful leaves. Nice trail with a beautiful setting along the Pine Creek. Parking was limited at the Blackwell trail head.
My family enjoyed a 3 mile walk from a starting point by Giant in Lewisburg. It was a busy day on the trail, so we had to keep looking behind us for bikers and joggers. I was disappointed to see quite a bit of litter along the trail, especially 7-Eleven cups. Not sure why people think it's ok to throw it along the way.
Easy Ride on crushed stone. Trail is very flat from Clearfield to Curwensville. However, begins to climb uphill from Curwensville to Grampian. Several bridges crossing the Allegheny River and a few creeks. Most of this trail is through the woods and is shaded.
