Longleaf Trace - 2 JUN 23

June, 2023 by 7s5a692x35

The Longleaf Trace is in the process in the near term to be paved in certain areas. See photos of a flyer stating to follow the Longleaf Trace’s Facebook page. Here is the latest posting:

Due to some weather delays on current projects the contractor was unable to start as we had hoped. A new project date has not been confirmed at this time. Sorry for any inconvenience and again we appreciate your understanding and patience throughout this process. We are excited to soon start repaving the Longleaf Trace from Hattiesburg to near Apostolic Road past the Sumrall Station. The repaving will be done in sections and we will update closures here on our Facebook page. On May 15th the trail will be CLOSED at the Hattiesburg Gateway to the 59 Overpass for repaving. Thank you all in advance for your patience during this process!

The trail is tree canopied for 98% of the trail as we started in Prentiss and finished up in Hattiesburg at the Southern Prohibition Brewing Co. Due to the tree cover causing shadows it was hard to see the rough trail conditions caused by tree roots causing asphalt heave even as they were marked by bright colored paint but the paint had faded over time. You need to stay focused on the trail versus sightseeing along the way.

There plenty of rest stops on the trail to include “rain stops” with overhead cover when you experience inclement weather while on the trail. The rain stops seemed to be located near the populated areas.

Mileage was marked with a mile maker every mile which is helpful if not using GPS.

Once they pave the areas needing attention, this will regain a 5 star status this Hall of Fame trail deserves again

Great Trail

May, 2023 by eguydjr

We road round trip from Jackson Station 2x. First to Eply & 2 weeks later to Sumral.
Enjoyed every Minute. There are a few rough patches, in broad day light easy to see, but second ride was late evening & shadows were low, not enough to cause a problem but a surprise.
Over all, Ill do it again next time I come this way.

What a Lovely Trail

April, 2023 by gary.heissler_tl

Got on the trail at Sumrall and rode north 19 miles to Carson. It was a scenic, country ride on a asphalt trail that was in good condition. We rode mdi-week so basically had the trail to ourselves. There were designated rest areas along the trail with flush bathrooms at Bassfield and Douglas trailheads. We will definitely do this trail again when we’re in the area!

Deserving of Hall of Fame Status

October, 2022 by vc2019

Rode from Hattiesburg near Smokestack Park to Epley and back today. Trail is so wide and clean and the weather perfect for an October ride. Thanks to all who keep this trail in such good shape.

Trail definitely worth a visit

As per others, you'll enjoy the ride. Lots of shading, lot of easy riding, with benches and clean restrooms throughout. Some patching of the trail near the office; it's bumpy but fine, but it wasn't done by the best contractor! My only complaint: the restrooms at the welcome center were locked. I was told they stay locked due to vandalism. Okay, but during the day? With the office right there? I was told I could use the next one on the trail, seven miles away. That's not exactly what I expected from a Hall of Fame trail. He wouldn't open it, so I knocked off a star.

Wonderfully well maintained and marked trail

June, 2022 by wxjeff

I utilized the parking at Lake Jefferson Davis and the Mayor/Col Blount connecting trail. I ran/walked another 1.5 +/- miles east before returning.

I enjoyed my sunrise outing, the woods and the countryside. Public road crossing were clearly signed and marked. The asphalt surface was in great shape with just a few bumps and eroded spots near the edges.

It was a little "buggy" in spite of my insect repellent, but that's to be expected in late June!

AMAZING HALL OF FAME TRAIL!

April, 2022 by thejake91739

On a perfect March morning, we parked at the Jackson Road Station and then pedaled NW away from Hattiesburg to first enjoy ten miles of a rural experience: farms, ranches, pastures, creeks, ponds, rolling hills, woodlands, and solitude. Easy pedaling and extremely picturesque!

Once back to Jackson Road, we continued east with easy, flat pedaling for about four miles for the opposite experience: a much more crowded trail filled with friendly people, the city of Hattiesburg, but a still beautiful tree lined path.

We traveled two thousand miles from Southern California to experience this Hall of Fame Trail, and we were not disappointed! As for a review of this five star trail, see the previous 70+ reviews. I can't surpass any of their superlatives!

First overnight bike tour with my son

September, 2021 by aaron.j.walters

This trail is a gem. 45 miles of beautiful Mississippi countryside with smooth pavement and almost no interaction with traffic of any kind. My 7 year old son and his best friend switched every 3 miles between a pull behind trailer and a solo bike and made the entire way from Hattiesburg to Prentiss on the first day, and then returned the next day. It was an awesome introduction to bicycle touring, and by the end my son was asking if there were more trails like this that we could explore together. The mile markers at every mile are great motivation for young cyclists as well. What an amazing trail and experience.

bridge is out

March, 2021 by mlrlet1125

We started at Hwy 49 and wanted to go as far as lake and turn back, but a little over 4 miles in the bridge was out and you couldn’t go further. Wish there had been a notice stating that. There is not a single bench to rest. Trail is well maintained and easy to navigate.
