April 26!!! We heard the prettiest part of the Rio Grande Trail was from Carbondale down to Aspen. Unfortunately about 3 miles out of Carbondale the trail had a gate and was closed seasonally from Dec 1 through April 30 with detour sign that routes you through El Jebel and Basalt, approx 4 miles!! Several of those detour roads were very heavy traffic and not near as pleasant as the trail!! So RIDER BEWARE Dec 1 - April 30
My wife and I rode this today. Beautiful weather, perfect temperature. Gorgeous ride from Glenwood Springs up the canyon. Mild uphill grade for 12 miles (1540 elevation climb). Coming back you can almost coast all the way. This is my favorite ride now.
This became one of our top ten trails around the country. We got on the RFTA bus in Glenwood Springs at the 27th Street bus stop for a 75 minute ride up to Aspen, with our bikes on the front bike holders. After exploring Aspen town, the ride down (mostly level valleys and 1% to 2% downhills) was an nice four-hour rail-trail ride covering 42 miles. Loved it!
My husband and I took the Amtrak to Glenwood Springs with our bikes and a back pack. The ride from Glenwood Springs to Carbondale on day 1 scenery was fair to good. A gradual approx 16 mi ascent to Carbondale. No water on this stretch and feels like dessert riding so be prepared. Left for Aspen early the next morning. This is beautiful and moderate to strenuous riding. You rarely stop pedaling and will encounter a few switchbacks. We stopped at Woody Creek for lunch. Nice place to have a drink and a little nourishment. You do have to leave the trail onto woody creek road or you will miss it. There is a very short stretch of gravel/ dirt we handled fine with our road bikes. If I could do it over we would take the RFTA to Aspen and ride all downhill to be able enjoy the beauty more .
This is a beautiful concrete trail along the Colorado River. Although it is a short trail, it joins other trails.
This past weekend, I rode the Rio Grande Trail from Glenwood Springs to Carbondale and back, about 24 miles roundtrip. Although you're paralleling the roadway for much of the journey, there is always a wide median of grass, underbrush, and/or trees so it's not unpleasant and there are spectacular views to be had along the way, including of Mt. Sopris, the Roaring Fork River, and rural landscapes dotted with cows. In Carbondale, there is also some fun public art, including a cool archway over the trail with a bit of railroad track in it as a nod to the trail's railroad heritage. There are a handful of road crossings, but they are all well marked and the busiest ones also have walk signals. One note: There are no drinking fountains along the way, so be sure to bring water, and there is only one trailside bathroom in this northern stretch, about 8.7 miles south of Glenwood Springs.
We rode the Trail from Carbondale to Aspen which is superb. The last few miles onto Aspen is quite beautiful and visiting Aspen is enjoyable. This trail should be recognized as Hall of Fame trail!
Awesome trail. E-bike. 8 miles are only open due to mud slide debris. But had a good time. 1st day biking and altitude is higher than I expected. Hot weather lots of water.
There is no better way to see the Roaring Fork valley than along the Rio Grande; no traffic and endless miles of beautifully maintained paved trails. Bring your fly-rod; a lot of gold medal fishing fronts the trail!
We rode from Glenwood Springs to Aspen and back in a day. The fall colors were beautiful. We did not know the paved part ended at the railway car homes. Dirt road was rideable even on road bikes. While everyone that we ran across was pretty respectful of announcing themselves when passing, we did run into a lot of e-bike rental users who were flying down the dirt section without announcing themselves or care of other users on the dirt road.
As good as it gets! Well maintained, beautiful scenery. My wife and I have spent 4 weeks here and ride almost every day!
