We took off midway at the park, very nice and scenic. Only thing we hoped for is a loop around Tempe Town Lake which we found out doesn't exist.
I love biking the canal systems.
I entered at 56th street just across the street from the 56th hydro power plant (this is really cool place to stop stretch and read some history).
The bike under passes were fine until 27th ave and there were two transients but easily passed. The I 17 underpass was a different story.
I got 1/4 down the slope and the entire tunnel was blocked with transients. There was no way to bike safely through. At this point I turned around and went on in another direction.
This is an excellent trail with great underpasses for smooth cruising. A bit congested at some of the parks on a Sunday’s in April.
Picked up the trail from the Julian Wash Greenway. It is an asphalt trail with beautiful landscaping along the way. There could have been better signage because there are several bike paths that intersect and it is easy to get turned around. No homeless people, no unsafe areas. We went on a Monday, late morning. There were some runners and cyclists. Very enjoyable.
Beginning at north end of trail is at Latitude: 33.632168 / N 33° 37' 55.806" Longitude: -111.873594 / W 111° 52' 24.94' with a parking lot for trailers. Just 1/10 mile down the trail at Latitude: 33.630892 / N 33° 37' 51.213" Longitude: - 111.870908 / W 111° 52' 15.268" is a parking lot and restrooms. Not really sure how long this trail really is because it merged into the Indian Bend Wash trail without us knowing it. Still a great ride. Only negative was having to cross streets at the north end of the trail.
I agree with a few of the comments made by others here. I have now ridden this trail a few times and it seems that as you go towards Glendale you will ride through some sketchier areas. There are a lot of surface crossings. Just as you get a good rhythm going, you have to stop. The crossing at 16th and Indian School road is tough. Mostly the surface is clean. One side of the canal is concrete and the other is gravel (with some glass)
Yes there are plenty of intersections, but a fun ride in good shape. One of my favorites!
Stay away from the South Mountain side in Laveen. Not only is there almost zero shade, the surface is broken pavement with a mixture of some light gravel. There are some sketchy neighborhood spots that you have to run behind. But most importantly, way too many streets to cross without any crosswalks. Every other block you have to cross a street. And you have to fight traffic (sometimes standing in the middle because you can only get across one part of the traffic at a time). This path is awesome. It is asphalt, very smooth and well maintained. It can be busy at times and is a multipurpose trail where portions can’t be used for any motorized vehicles. So if you walk, road bike, mountain bike, or use a trike, it a great path!
Trail was amazing and beautiful scenery along the way. Parks, neighborhoods and wildlife along the path. Very busy on the weekend but we'll worth it!
